Tromsø Arctic packing essentials
Tromsø's biggest packing mistake is underestimating the cold. Even in shoulder months like April and October, temperatures hover near freezing and wind chill makes it feel colder. The layering system — merino base, insulating mid-layer, windproof outer shell — is the correct approach, not a single heavy coat.
Footwear is the other critical decision. Winter-rated insulated boots and slip-on ice grips are non-negotiable from November to March, when pavements in the city centre ice over daily. In summer, waterproof hiking boots cover both city walks and day hikes to Lyngen or Senja.
Norway runs almost entirely on card — contactless Visa or Mastercard is accepted everywhere including market stalls and small cabins. Prices are in NOK: a coffee costs 50–70 NOK, a beer 80–120 NOK. Having a card with no foreign transaction fees will save meaningful money over a week.
