Tromsø at a glance by season

Spring (March–April) is a brilliant shoulder season: the polar night is over, daylight returns rapidly, and the northern lights are still visible on dark nights. Snow covers the mountains well into April, meaning dog sledding, snowmobiling and skiing remain active while temperatures climb to a more manageable −5 to 0°C. Crowds thin out after the winter aurora peak. A great time for aurora chasers who want flexibility and lower prices.

Midnight-sun summer (May–July) transforms Tromsø completely. The sun never sets from around 20 May to 22 July — long, bright evenings invite hiking, kayaking, wild swimming and photography. Temperatures reach 10–15°C. This is the most pleasant time outdoors, but note that the northern lights are invisible during the midnight sun. Popular trails such as Storsteinen and Tromsdalstinden attract steady crowds. August marks the transition back toward darkness.

Autumn (August–October) brings the return of darkness and with it the first northern lights of the season — often visible from late August or September. Whale watching off Skjervøy begins in late October as orcas and humpbacks follow the herring. Temperatures cool from 5–10°C in September to sub-zero by late October. September is an underrated sweet spot: mild, quiet, first auroras, dramatic low light on the fjords.

Winter (November–February) is the aurora season in full swing. Polar night — when the sun does not rise at all — runs from 27 November to 15 January, leaving a soft twilight glow around noon. Northern lights are visible on most clear nights. Whale watching peaks November–January. Expect temperatures of −10 to −20°C; dress in multiple thermal layers. This is the busiest and most expensive period. Book tours and accommodation several months in advance.
