How much does a trip to Tromsø cost?

Tromsø is one of Norway's most visited Arctic cities, and prices reflect that. Budget travelers staying in hostels and self-catering can manage on around 1 400–1 700 NOK per person per day. Mid-range travelers in 3-star hotels and eating out should expect 2 800–3 500 NOK per person per day. Luxury stays at design hotels with guided private experiences can easily reach 5 000–7 000 NOK per person per day.

The biggest variable in an Arctic trip is paid activities — and these are where the real money goes. An aurora chase tour runs around 2 000 NOK per person, whale watching in Skjervøy is roughly 1 690 NOK, and a dog-sledding excursion costs about 2 950 NOK. If you plan just one activity per day, factor that into your daily budget from day one. Food is also expensive: a coffee costs around 50 NOK, a food-truck meal 190 NOK, and a restaurant main dish 400 NOK or more. Beer in a bar runs 80–120 NOK.

Getting from the airport (TOS, 4 km from centre) is simple: the public bus (lines 40/42) costs 48 NOK; the Flybuss airport shuttle costs 125 NOK. Tromsø city centre is very walkable, so you only need a car if you plan excursions to Senja (2.5–3 h), Lyngen Alps (1.5–2 h) or Sommarøy (1 h). Car hire from around 800 NOK/day before fuel.
