Northern lights (Sept–Apr) — Tromsø sits directly under the auroral oval. Best conditions: clear sky + Kp ≥ 3. Take a guided minibus chase; standing in town rarely works. Peak season: Nov–Feb.
Whale watching (Nov–Jan) — Humpback and orca follow herring into the fjords. Skjervøy is the hotspot. Tours run from Tromsø harbour. Miss this window and they're gone.
Dog sledding (Dec–Apr) — Tamok Valley, 45 min south. Drive your own team. Price ~2950 NOK. Most operators need snow cover so early December is variable.
Senja & Lyngen (year-round, car essential) — Senja is 2.5–3h for coastal drama; Lyngen Alps 1.5–2h for mountain grandeur. Full day minimum each.
Sami culture (year-round, best Dec–Mar) — Reindeer feeding, lavvu tent, joik chant. Most atmospheric in snow. Ask if the camp has genuine Sami family connections.
Hiking (May–Oct) — Tromsdalstinden and Fjellheisen ridge in summer. Lyngen Alps for serious terrain. Midnight sun hiking in June–July is unforgettable.
City highlights — Fjellheisen cable car to Storsteinen, Arctic Cathedral, Polaria, Ølhallen pub. Half day covers it all; free to walk.
Midnight sun (May–Jul) — Fjord cruises at midnight in June are magical. The sun barely dips below the hills. Golden light on the water for hours.
